JAKARTA – Special Forces Command (Kopassus) is an elite unit of the Indonesian Army that always produces brave and patriotic soldiers in the field of operations. It is not surprising that the unit with the characteristic of the Red Beret is often deployed to carry out operations both domestically and abroad.

There are many interesting and unique stories experienced by Kopassus soldiers during their duties. Like the experience of Pelda Sumardi when on duty in Bosnia, one of the countries that emerged from Yugoslavia.

The soldier, who has expertise in demolitions, is nicknamed Mardi “Rambo” because he has been deployed to the field of operations 14 times. An extraordinary record because usually Kopassus soldiers are deployed a maximum of four times in operations areas.

For Mardi Rambo, his assignment to Bosnia was a happiness. This is certainly different from the civilian population, as working in conflict areas is a disaster because their lives are at risk. But who would have thought, the happiness that Mardi Rambo meant was being able to experience a plane landing.

”It was sooo nice in Bosnia. The plane took off and then landed. Turns out landing is sooo nice,” said Mardi Rambo when asked about his assignment to Bosnia quoted from the book titled “Kopassus for Indonesia” on Friday (15/12/2023).

Upon further investigation, it turns out that the soldier with a wealth of experience in the field of operations only experienced a landing for the first time when going to Bosnia. Because until now, Mardi Rambo had only experienced take offs, as usually before landing he had already been dropped from the plane while still in the air.

Another story is the experience of Major Umar when on duty in the Darfur operation area, Sudan. The Kopassus officer who was part of the Garuda Contingent of the United Nations African Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) left for Sudan under the Union Hybrid Operation that combined the UN and African Union.
