Indonesia commemorates its 80th Independence Day as a symbolic celebration of freedom from colonial influence and as a reminder of the nation’s enduring commitment to eradicating hunger, illiteracy, and underdevelopment. In line with this spirit, the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) program was introduced as a tangible expression of independence in the realm of nutrition, emphasizing its significance as an investment in the future of Indonesia, especially in the well-being of its children.
Deputy for Dissemination and Media Information, Noudhy Valdryno, highlighted the program’s impact by stating that through MBG, millions of schoolchildren, pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, and toddlers now receive nutritious meals daily. The initiative not only enhances children’s academic performance and concentration but also supports their physical growth and cognitive development. It is envisioned as a foundational element in nurturing an exceptional generation striving towards Indonesia Emas 2045, the nation’s vision for prosperity.
Recognized by international organizations, MBG is regarded as one of the most effective long-term investments for the Indonesian populace. Its reach has extended to eight million beneficiaries, comprising students from various educational levels, pregnant women under health services, and toddlers enrolled in community health programs. Expert Ikeu Tanziha from the National Nutrition Council (BGN) noted tangible benefits of MBG, such as improved Body Mass Index (BMI) among children and a positive impact on classroom concentration and cognitive abilities.
The program’s influence is not limited to health and education outcomes but also extends to economic empowerment, generating new employment opportunities and supporting small businesses involved in supplying ingredients for the initiative. Suratina, a grandmother working at an MBG kitchen, expressed gratitude for the job’s financial support and the camaraderie established in the kitchen, reminiscent of caring for her own grandchildren. MBG’s holistic approach underscores its role in fostering both individual well-being and community development, reflecting a commitment to realizing Indonesia’s aspirations for a nourished and prosperous future.
