The National Nutrition Agency (Badan Gizi Nasional, BGN) is pushing for the integration of nutrition education into the national school curriculum as part of its effort to create a healthier, smarter, and more competitive generation of Indonesians. According to Ikeu Tanziha, a member of the BGN’s Nutrition Expert Council, providing structured and integrated nutrition education in schools is essential for developing a strong understanding of nutrition from an early age.
Ikeu emphasized that schools are the perfect platform for delivering comprehensive nutritional knowledge to students, helping them understand the link between diet, health, and overall well-being. The proposed curriculum would cover topics such as basic nutrition concepts, food group classification, the role of nutrients in bodily functions, and the risks of unhealthy eating habits.
In addition to knowledge, nutrition education aims to raise awareness about the importance of a balanced diet and empower students to make informed dietary choices. It also plays a key role in preventing diet-related illnesses like obesity and diabetes. Practical skills such as cooking and gardening will also be incorporated into the curriculum to provide students with hands-on experience.
By integrating nutrition education into schools, BGN hopes to create a united front across schools, families, and communities in promoting balanced nutrition. This initiative is expected to equip students with the tools they need to lead healthy lives, prevent diseases, and enhance their overall quality of life in the long run.
BGN has been actively promoting nutrition education through various channels, including social media outreach and educational videos related to the Free Nutritious Meals Program. The agency calls on all stakeholders to support the integration of nutrition education into the school curriculum as part of Indonesia’s vision to build a Golden Generation by 2045. According to Ikeu, the Free Nutritious Meals Program can only reach its full potential when complemented by comprehensive nutrition education that resonates throughout society.
